2016 Boy of the Year
Today, John Angelovic is a healthy 6th grader who loves chocolate, science class, baseball, and animals. He thinks he might even want to be a veterinarian one day. Aside from annual check-ups with his oncologist, you might never know that he had been sick. But it wasn’t always that way. Just one week after his first birthday, John’s parents Kristen and Mike, and big sister Amanda – learned that John would be facing a battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (A.L.L.). He went through daily rounds of chemotherapy and the aches, pains, and weight gain that often accompany it. He was a strong little patient though – enduring lumbar punctures, blood and plasma transfusions and countless hospitalizations – but with children undergoing treatment as young as John was, doctors had to be vigilant, stopping the chemotherapy multiple times when his body began to shut down and could not handle the amount of medicine it needed. Incredibly scary for the Angelovic family, but thankfully those times are now behind them. Now 11 years old, John is doing great! He is even on a competitive diving team with dreams of going to the Olympics!
